Many fans tend to express their love of a franchise in many ways, one such way being fan fiction. Fan fiction is just what it sounds like, it's a work of fiction created by a fan based on a certain franchise. Various stories written by various people can be found around the internet, but only one place successfully holds a humongous mass of them: Fanfiction.Net.

While fan fiction may be easy to understand, FF.Net members tend to have a lot of terms in almost every franchise to specify specific things in some fanfics. Listed below is a concise dictionary, of sorts, for almost every term followed by a brief description.

Terms Definition
___X___ This often occurs when an author wants to convey that a certain fanfic is centered around a specific couple of either canon or fan origin within a franchise. Example: SonicXAmy or Sonic X Amy. Can also be written by combining names of the people involved such as ShadAmy (Shadow X Amy).
AU Abbreviation meaning "Alternate Universe". Stories with this attached to their descriptions generally involve characters from a specific franchise, but are placed in an area or a universe of the author's creation. Example: All the Inuyasha characters in a High School setting.
Crossover A fanfiction consisting of two seperate fandoms or franchises combined into one story. Example: Sailor Moon/DBZ (a / represents a crossover of the two franchises).
Drabble A term used to describe a fanfiction with multiple chapters that are unrelated (usually) to each other. Sometimes centered around a particular theme (like a couple). Drabbles are also very short in length with each chapter being 500 words or so.
Fluff Fanfics marked with this term will mostly contain light elements of romance such as kissing or hugging.
Lemon This ONLY occurs in fanfics that are heavily written with sexual references, situations, or undertones. Read these kinds of fics at your own risk.
OC Abbreviation meaning "Original Character". This term is commonly appointed with fan characters made by the author to fit into a certain franchise's world. Should not be confused with "OOC".
One-Sided A romance term implying that a couple within the fiction is only by one person. In other words, there will be a character who likes another character but the character receiving the affection does not reciprocate the feelings. Example: SonAmy with one-sided ShadAmy or InuKag with one-side InuSan. This term does not always specify the character showing a main couple character unrequited affection.
Oneshot Term used to describe fanfics that are only one chapter long. In other words, "one-chapter wonders". Oneshots never have more than one chapter, they always consist of one whole story in ONE chapter.
OOC Abbreviation meaning "Out of Character". This term describes characters in a franchise that are not acting as they normally would. This can be taken as a good or bad thing as some humor fics require characters to not be in character. Example: Sonic thinking before he takes action.
PWP A descriptive abbreviation meaning "Porn Without Plot", or alternatively "Plot? What Plot?"
R & R Only found on FF.Net, this is normally put into a summary or in an author note to ask readers to "read and review".
Slash A term commonly used to identify fics where gay or lesbian coupling might occur.
Twincest A term used to identify fics with a couple that are related as twins. This can be a sexual reference term too. Example: Yoh and Hao from Shaman King are often subjected to this by some fans.
Two-Shot This is what happens if the author of a fanfiction adds another chapter to a oneshot. If anymore chapters are added after that, then it becomes just a normal fanfiction.
Yaoi Term used to describe fics with heavy maleXmale romance. Can also include sexual occurences based on the rating.
Yuri Same as Yaoi, only with girls.
